Library Rumble is a top-down, local multiplayer, party game developed in two weeks at Futuregames. We had the requirements to make a physics-based, competitive game with a bizarre challenge.
Roles: Gameplay designer & scripter
Time: 2 weeks
Team size: 7 people (3 designers)
Genre: Competitive party game
Engine: Unreal Engine 4
Code: Blueprints
Unleash chaos in a library as robots studying for a big exam. There is only one copy of the book needed, and everybody wants it. Compete against the other students to find the special book and hold it until you have all the needed knowledge.
Hit bookshelves to find
the special book
Hit other players to stun them and steal the special book
Hold the special book to gain knowledge and win
Phase 1
Phase 2
Why two phases?
The first phase to introduce the player to the hit mechanic and make them turn a neat and clean library into a chaotic and stressful battle arena.
The second phase to bring out the competition and make the players fight each other.
Physics based

PROBLEM
At first, we had the idea to have the player shoot a projectile at the other players to steal the book. We quickly realized that it didn't go well with a narrow environment.

SOLUTION
We changed the projectile into a slap. Instead of shooting, the player now had to chase their opponents. This suited the level a lot better and it made the players move and interact more.

The bookshelves are created by first checking all the bookshelves in the level and then picking a random out of them to spawn the special book. When a player hits a bookshelf it checks if the bookshelf has the special book, if it’s true the bookshelf will spawn both normal books and the special book and if it’s false the bookshelf will only spawn normal books.
